Baby Name Predictions - What will be popular 20 years from now?

Names seem to go in cycles. 20 years ago, Emma, Hannah and Ava were considered stuffy old lady names. They'd been popular when our great-grandmothers were having kids. Now they've been recycled and sound new and fresh again. But in 80 years, they'll be back in the nursing home.

So what will OUR kids by naming their sons and daughters 20-30 years from now?

Baby Name Predictions - What will be popular 20 years from now?
Since the "old lady names" are coming back for our time (Lillian, Cora, Emily, etc) I think the names that were popular in the 60s will be back in 20 years. I think Nancy, Carol, Karen, Pamela, Cynthia, etc. will be names of our grandkids and our grandkids friends.
Reply:Laura Wattenberg of the Baby Name Wizard wrote an interesting blog entry on this. Basically there is what she calls the "great-grandma rule" which means that we tend to choose names that our great-grandparents might have had. That is why there is a resurgence at the moment of names like Isabella, Rose, Sophia, Hannah and Emily and Jacob, William, and Joseph.

Wattenberg says that it generally takes around 120+ years to see a name pass through two full cycles so in 20 years we will be seeing names that were popular around 1908. According to Social Security these were the 20 most popular male and female names for 1908

1. John

2 William

3 James

4 George

5 Robert

6 Joseph

7 Charles

8 Frank

9 Edward

10 Thomas

11 Henry

12 Walter

13 Willie

14 Harry

15 Albert

16 Arthur

17 Harold

18 Paul

19 Clarence

20 Fred

1. Mary

2 Helen

3 Margaret

4 Ruth

11 Florence

12 Ethel

13 Lillian

14 Frances

James, Henry, Grace and Louise are nice but I'm not sure I want to see a resurgence of Clarence and Edna.

Reply:Stupid, uncreative, made up names. Things like Xytosis and Turmiun. Since more and more people are getting pregnant when they don't care and don't want their babies, I'm sure we'll see a lot of Toilet Bowl's, Light Bulb's, and Banana Split's.

I like made up names if they aren't letters smashed together randomly. But still....I'm sure it will get ridiculous.
Reply:interesting question i think some older names will come back yet kids will start getting more unusual names like some celebs have chosen (i mean Peaches and Apple? pretty strange)
Reply:Our kids will probably consider the names of our mothers cool - Linda, Ellen, Cathleen, Lynn, Gail
Reply:Willow will be close to the top for girls

Barak will be close to the top for boys
Reply:Ethel, Agnes, Harold, Winston
Reply:they say history repeats I strongly believe the old names like violet and pearl and harold and david will be back
Reply:Ow about "Roo". I find it rather catchy meself.
Reply:Gwendolyn

Reply:yeah i think old people names will be back like drothory and gwendalen for girls
Reply:Yes but those ''stuffy old names are '' golden oldies and will remain popular .. such as the names you mentioned plus, Emily a very old name really and only just recently in one English speaking country Emily which has been and is the nr. 1 most popular girls name has now been replace by Ava, Eva is following closely behind, Emma, Samatha is popular and some names will always be around such as Alexandra, Victoria, Rebecca, Hannah, Victoria, Elizabeth, Katherine or Catherine, Sophie or Sofia.. those names will still be popular in 20 years from now. and the biblical names also will survive

Joshua, Thomas, Mark. Luke or Lucas, Matthew, John,, etc.

Alexander will be there, Edward, William, Ann or Anna and Rose and Grace, Maria now more than Mary but Mary or Marie are very popular also and old names.

The trendy names of today are the ones that won't be here because in 20 years they will be replaced by new trendy names but the others.. they will remain popular some more some less. The top list will change in the next 20 years and what is now the most popular non trendy name may go down on the list but these evergreens here will be on top 100 list...even if they may sound stuffy to some but the will and have shown that those are the names that survive and the trendy names will not be popular in 20 years ...Jayden and Kayden will be gone...So will be Nevaeh spealling ''Heaven backwards...At present this name is on nr 49 of the popular name list but this won't stay.. that is a trendy name and has no future in 20 years..''The ''Stuffy' the golden oldie names will still be leading the list of popular names.. plus all the biblical names and apart from that new trendy names will come into fashion within the next 20 or 30 years and those who don't like names that have survived centuries will pick the then new trendy names which won't be the same as the ones of today..xx

You only have to take a look at this list of Victorian names popular 130 years ago.. some of them are no longer popular and are not used anymore.. but some have stayed and if those of them on this list who were popular 130 years ago.. they who still are popular now will remain so 30 years into the future..
