The hospital mis-spelled my babies name on the birth certificate...?

Now her Social Security card has her name spelled wrong also. How can we get her named changed to the correct spelling without having to pay the fees?

The hospital mis-spelled my babies name on the birth certificate...?
Contact the hospital where your baby was born and they are supposed to correct this. Start with the business office or social services. We had the same thing but fixed it the hard way because we didn't know the hospital was responsible to take care of it. The state office told us this after the birth certificate was fixed as they were handing us the new one.

If not changed can be issues with passports, school records, social security benefits, insurance benefits, etc in the future if you persist in using the desired spelling instead of the "correct spelling" that matches the SS card and the birth certificate. We came across this with a grandmother that had immigrated and her real name was different than what she had used her whole life. Had problems with Social Security and Medicare. Just a heads up, easier to fix...Only cost us $15.00, but hospital should fix for free....
Reply:They should have given you a form to review before you left the hospital. On that form, they had recorded what the name and address was. If it was wrong on that form (it was on my son's), you should have brought that to their attention. Did they not let you see it before you left? Didn't they give you a keepsake birth certificate (the one with the foot prints on the sides)?

I would suggest calling the hospital where your daughter was born at, because someone with the hospital was the one who submitted the information to the health department and had the certificate and card issued. They should be able to correct it without difficulty.

If they say they can't, your next step would be to go to the Health Department in the county she was born in, and speak to someone there.

You have to get the birth certificate taken care of first, because to change a misspelling on the social security card, they will ask to see the birth certificate.

When my son was born, they spelled his name wrong on the form for the birth certificate, and I told them, and they corrected it. However they failed to correct the one for the social security card. So the birth certificate was right, but the card was wrong. All I had to do to fix the card was get a copy of his birth certificate and another form of ID (I used an insurance card, but you should call first and see what all forms of ID they accept), and take them and the misspelled card to the closest Social Security office. We had to wait in chairs for about 30 minutes, but it was free to have the misspelling changed, and we got a correct card in the mail in about 2 weeks.

Good luck!
Reply:Ring the department of births deaths and marriages (well thats what it is called in new zealand) And explain to them what happened they should just change it for free!

Good luck
Reply:I had this happen too. I never changed it, I just spell in correctly on all paperwork, etc. She is now 15 and we have never had a problem with it .
Reply:It depends on if it is her first, middle or last name. My husband's last named was mis-spelled at birth and they changed it for free. His mom just had to show proof. that was 23 years ago. My friends daughters middle name was mis-spelled and they wouldn't do anything without a name change request, which costs a couple of hundred.
