I think it's Japanese in origin. The mother's sisters replace her newborns with cats in order to convince her husband that they are monsters because they are jealous.

There is a Chinese tale about this. An emperor had two concubines who were pregnant at the same time. He said the son born first would inherit the throne. Lady Liu stole Lady Li's baby and replaced it with a cat that had been shaven. The Emperor thought it was a monster and said Lady Liu's son was to be his heir. This baby was weak and soon died. A brave maid had hidden the other baby, and he grew up to inherit the throne.
Reply:That sounds similar to the Changeling myth in Irish folklore...though what is replaced for the baby is a faery Changeling while the child is taken to live among the faery folk.
