How do they name babies in China?

I hate stereotypes, but hearing this made me curious...because I heard it from a Chinese boy I know....He said that they name babies by throwing pots and pans down the stairs and whatever sound they hear becomes the baby's name...? I'm still hesitant to believe this (his jokes can be difficult to discern sometimes).

How do they name babies in China?
I heard it was silver ware they threw up in the air and what ever sound it made. But, of course, the Chinese don't use silver ware. It's a very old joke your friend has told you. I hope he lives to be as old as that joke.
Reply:I heard the same joke, but instead of pot and pan down the stairs, it was that they rolled a metal hubcap down a hill at the local scrapyard. He was joking with you.
Reply:Thats a racist joke.

They name babies the same way every parents name their baby.

They thought it over very carefully about what it means in their culture before they decide.
Reply:boys get names, girls get thrown back..sad but true
Reply:It's just a joke, no one throws a pot anywhere, they pick out their names just like you and I do and when they repeat the same name such as Ling Ling it's a term of endearment!
Reply:He was messing with you. lol. They name their kids just like everyone else. =)
Reply:Well I'm chinese but born in UK. They might do that in more rural areas but my parents named me based on a hope of something. Like one of my chinese friends has the word "healthy" in their name because they were ill when they were born and his parents wanted him to be healthy and get better. The pots and pans thing may not even work to make a name! The people's names would be like " Clang Clang Bang"...
