I want to change the last name on my babies birth certificate?

I want to change my babys last name how do i go along doing it

I want to change the last name on my babies birth certificate?
I'm in UK and split with my son's father when he was 6 months old (we were not married). I wanted to change my son's surname back to my maiden name and made an appointment to see a solicitor. I couldn't change the birth certificate and had to do a Change of Name Deed. I didn't pay anything at that time as I was receiving income support and it was quite a few years ago.I do know that if you are married or even divorced, you do have to have the father's consent. Hope this helps.
Reply:If the child is under 2 months you can just ask for a new birth certificate with a new last name. (might need to visit the hospital, or some sort of center to get your ID check and so on, so they are sure its YOUR child)

Usually the office will be in the capital of that city, might have some branchs but most of the time they don't.

If the child is older (past 2 months) you might need to go to court and ask for a motions. To have the childs named changes. The judge will of course grant the motions and you'll receive a form, stating the childs new name, then you can either visit the office of certification and present the form, or send it in (or fax)

Now if your married (and not formally divorced) you might not be able to do that all too easily. Also the father maybe asked to be present even if not married (They have to see if he objects to change of the childs name)

I guess its horrible to state it like this but; If you don't know the father or don't want the father to know, or he doesn't care you might be able to get by with it (Or they'll ask you to find the father just to make sure he doesn't have any objections, because losing the childs last name is reliving the father of any responsibility). But if the father pays child support, and so on... Thats almost not possible...Unless you want to stop child support. And so on...

Good luck.
Reply:It depends. You have a certain amount of time to edit the birth certificate after it is submitted, Depending on how old the baby is. If the father submits an affidavit of paternity you may get it changed for free at that point. If you want to change it any other way you will have to do it through the legal system.
Reply:Petition the Probate Court. Call the Clerk of Court and ask what you need to do.
Reply:Legally, through the courts.
Reply:See a lawyer.
